Job Title: Estimator – Underground Utilities & Earthwork

Location: Buda, Texas (Candidate must reside in or surrounding Buda, Texas)

Position Type: Full-Time

Reports to: Exec. Vice President

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly capable Estimator with strong experience in underground utilities and earthwork. This role will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for civil, utility, and earthwork projects and contributing to the company’s success by ensuring competitive, well-supported bids.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead estimating efforts for underground utilities (water, sewer, storm, etc.) and earthwork/site work components.
  • Perform takeoffs, review drawings, and analyze civil plans and specifications to quantify labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Solicit, review, and negotiate vendor and subcontractor quotes and material pricing.
  • Develop accurate cost models and databases; track actual costs vs. estimates; perform value engineering when possible.
  • Prepare proposals, bid packages, and presentations; ensure timely submission.
  • Monitor competitive pricing and market conditions to maintain accuracy and competitiveness in estimates.
  • Provide potential oversight or mentoring of junior estimators/estimating staff.
  • Coordinate with project management, operations, and field teams to align estimates with operational constraints.
  • Represent the company at pre-bid meetings, job site visits, and vendor meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred; equivalent experience considered).
  • Minimum of 5+ years estimating experience with underground utilities; experience with earthwork/excavation strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office (e.g., AGTEK, Bluebeam, HCSS HeavyBid preferred but not required, etc.).
  • Strong skills in reading civil/utility/earthwork plans and specifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong financial and numerical skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates concurrently and work under deadline pressure.
  • Willingness to travel for pre-bid meetings or jobsite reviews.

Preferred

  • Experience specific to Central Texas regulatory, permitting, and utility agencies.
  • Familiarity with local soils, geotechnical conditions, and productivity factors for excavation, fill, and compaction.
  • Existing relationships with local general contractors, developers, engineers, and public agencies in the underground utility/civil space.
